shops and castle. Market every Friday, selling a wide range of fruit,
vegetables, clothes, garden tools,
kitchenware and pottery. Road up to viewpoint from Serra dos Candeeiros hills
national park. Caves. |

| * ÓBIDOS -
35 minutes: Picturesque medieval walled town and castle
(UNESCO World Heritage Site). Try the red cherry liqueur in a dark chocolate
cup, then eat the cup!

| * CALDAS DA RAINHA - 30 minutes: Picturesque
town with 3 daily markets (flower/fruit/vegetable “Praça da Fruta”, fish and
durable goods), beautiful park with a boating lake and children’s playground, thermal spa,
shopping and ceramic shops/museums/factory outlet.

| * ALCOBAÇA - 5 minutes from the villa: Monastery/cloisters -
Portugal’s largest church, containing ornate tombs of King Dom Pedro I and Dona
Inês de Castro, the "Romeo and Juliet" of Portugal (UNESCO World Heritage site,
open to public); shops, cafés and
restaurants. Market day: Monday - fruit, vegetables, fish, poultry, flowers.
Nearby: The village of Aljubarrota, where the Portuguese defeated the
invading Castilian army in 1385, aided by 600 English longbowmen.

| * NAZARÉ - 20 minutes from the villa: Portugal’s most popular
traditional fishing village with locals in costume, fishing boats and a large,
beautiful beach with a cobbled boulevard that’s perfect for strolling. Take the
funicular up the 110m cliff for a wonderful panoramic view of the town, beach and
hinterland.

| * SÃO MARTINHO DO PORTO - 25 minutes: Quieter
beach than Nazaré, mostly enclosed within a bay which makes it ideal for
families with small children. Shops, cafés and restaurants. |

| * PENICHE -
50 minutes: Portugal’s largest
fishing port. Well known for its delicious shellfish and fish. Infamous for its
“Fortaleza”, a 16th Century fort that was used as a prison for political
prisoners during the dictatorship of Salazar. Perfect starting point for boat
trips, including to Berlenga Island.

40 minutes: Pilgrimage point for
Roman Catholics after the vision of the Virgin Mary in 1917 by three young
children while tending their flocks.

apartment: Massive abbey, noted
for its gorgeous Gothic/Manueline architecture (UNESCO World Heritage site), built
after victory over Castilian (Spanish) invaders in 1385.
